Talking to Your Child About Newtown

December 14, 2012 by wcarozza

You are probably wondering how to talk about the events in Newtown, CT with your children. Every family is different of course, and there are no easy answers. In short, honesty is important but there is no need to show every image or continuously focus on this sorrow with your young children. Listen closely to your kids and observe their behavior. It’s crucial to let them know that events like this are extremely rare and that you and your child’s teachers will keep them safe.

On Friday night, the National Association of Elementary School Principals sent its members a number of links to articles that might provide some assistance:

From the Nurse’s Office

Parents: please have their children dress appropriately with hats, mittens, and winter jackets. Snow pants and boots are necessary when there is snow on the ground. Students cannot play in the snow without proper clothing and must stay on the pavement to play if they are properly attired. A change of clothes, especially socks, is helpful to keep in your child’s backpack. There just isn’t enough spare clothing in the nurse’s office to keep up with the demand!

Yearly screenings for height, weight, vision and hearing will begin soon starting in the kindergarten classes. Results will not be sent home, but parents will be contacted if there are any concerns.

The Full 3Bs Song

Many years ago, Principal Bill Carozza wrote a song in response to Harold Martin School’s 3Bs: Be Safe, Be Respectful and Be Responsible. Thus, was born The 3Bs Song. Not long after, each classroom at HMS wrote a verse to coincide with different topics within the 3Bs. Here’s the complete song:

THE 3B’S SONG

Lyrics on Verses written by Harold Martin School children

Word on Chorus and Music by Bill Carozza

CHORUS:

3Bs know your 3Bs. Be Safe, Respectful and Responsible.

3Bs know your 3Bs. Be Safe, Respectful and Responsible.

WHAT DO YOU DO WHEN IT IS CLEAN UP  TIME — KBl

Our room is a mess.

There are toys on the floor.

We’ve been playing with our friends, today.

We clean up the room,

When we hear the song start.

We want to help each other clean…UP!

HOW DO WE BEHAVE AT SNACK TIME — KD

Now we’re sitting down for snack time.

We washed both our hands

We eat our food with our mouth closed.

Now we clean up our spot.

Put your towel in the trash.

Put your lunch box away.

HOW DO I BEHAVE IN THE BATHROOM? — 1F

When you’re using the bathroom

Keep the light on.

Close the stall door quietly.

Remember feet on the floor.

Flush, and wash your hands well,

And keep the water in the sink.

HOW DO I LINE UP AND WHAT IF I CAN’T BE FIRST? — 1S

My hands are hanging by my side.

I stand straight and tall.

I’m looking straight ahead of me.

I’m ready for the hall.

Keep your voice nice and low.

Keep up and watch where you go.

HOW DO I USE MY MANNERS AT LUNCH? — 1N

Raise your hand if you need help.

Talk to your friends.

Say please and thank you to all.

Eat all of your lunch.

Take care of your trash.

Wait patiently for the bell to ring.

BE RESPONSIBLE. WHAT DO YOU DO IF YOU SEE BULLYING BEHAVIOR? — 1P

You see a kid bullying friends.

Say, “No, don’t do that!”

Be a friend to the end.  Get help.

Bullying is not cool.

Keep it out of our school.

That’s being responsible.

HOW DO I TAKE CARE OF MY PERSONAL BEONGINGS — 2L

You see your things on the floor:

Book, pen, paper, hat.

You want to walk away carelessly.

But you realize you care—

You don’t step over them.

You pick them up responsibly.

WHAT DO YOU DO WHEN THERE IS A FIRE DRILL? — 2F

When you hear loud alarms,

You don’t need to be scared.

Just stop whatcha’ doing right away.

And you have to be calm,

When you line up and go,

Move silently to your spot.

GREETING PEOPLE — 2Y

When you’re walkig down the hallway.

Wear a smile on your face.

Say good morning to all you greet.

Keep your eye on your friends.

Let them know that you care,

That’s the way to start your day.

HOW DO YOU REPSECT OTHERS’ PERSONAL SPACE? —2P

When you’re sitting in a circle,

Looking at your friends,

You want to be right next to them,

But you know they need their space.

Don’t get to near them!

Respect “the bubble,”

It’ll be okay.

WHAT DO YOU DO WHEN YOU HAVE A SUBSTITUTE? — 3G

Today my teacher was absent.

In walked a sub.

We’ll keep a normal routine at school

And do the work that is planned.

Though it isn’t the same,

We know it’s only for a day.

WHAT DO YOU DO WHEN YOU HAVE MADE A BAD CHOICE OR MISTAKE? — 3M

I guess that I’ve made a bad choice.

Now what should I do?

I should admit I have made a mistake.

I need to apologize.

It’s the right thing to do.

I need to learn from my mistake.

WHAT DO YOU DO WHEN THERE IS A LOCKDOWN DRILL? — 3T

You hear, “Lockdown, lockdown, lockdown,”

Turn off the lights!

Lock the door, and hide in the corner.

Be quiet—no talk!

Sit still and wait

For… “All clear, all clear, all clear.”

HOW DO YOU BEHAVE AT RECESS ON THE PLAYGROUND? —3A

Now we’re out on the playground.

We’re all part of a game.

A good sport is what we should be.

Go down and not up

When you’re riding the slide.

We’ll be safe and have some fun.

* The Harold Martin Minute is a 60 second podcast with an update weekly on major HMS events.

* The first thing you’ll notice on the web site is the photo gallery. These pictures will give you a glimpse into daily life at HMS.

* A new feature is the updated HMS Calendar that will list all of the major school events. You’l see it right on our home page.
