Need ideas for vacation?

School vacations can be interesting for parents given day care issues and finding adult vacation time.  I know that a number of Hopkinton parents are traveling out of state or country but there’s many of us who stay home in the hope that we can plan day trips. As someone who lived in the midwest as a kid and vacationed back here (my folks grew up in the Boston area) I try not to lose sight of the amazing vacation opportunities that exist in our back yard. I gathered a few web sites for families to help brainstorm ideas: (from Bill Carozza)

Special Olympics

This year the NHIAA has partnered with the Special Olympics to create a Unified Basketball league. This coed program joins individuals with special needs with partners in an NHIAA-sponsored basketball league.  Roughly 18 schools in the state, including Hopkinton,  are participating in this first ever year of the program, and it has been a great success for everyone involved.  Last night the Hawks played their final regular season game of the year against Hanover.  We won, and and finished the season with a perfect 4-0 record.  The Hawks now move on to the playoffs.  First up will be a home game this Monday night 2/6 vs Milford at Hopkinton High School at 6:30.  Admission for the event is free and it is a great opportunity to come cheer athletes and partners on from both schools.  Check out the picture of the team on the HMS website.

Web Site Changes

I’ve made some subtle changes to the web site that I want you to be aware of. On the right hand side of the home page at: http://www.hopkintonschools.org/haroldmartinschool/ are “widgets,” small square blocks that contain information or are remote players of information from other sites. As always, I have the Harold Martin School Podcast widget which provides a simple way to play the latest (or older) podcasts. There’s also a new widget with a link to our Picasa photo site with pics of our new HMS Playground construction from a year ago. For me, it’s a reminder of great memories. Also in that column I have a new feature I’m calling the “Harold Martin Minute.” It’s a one minute, weekly podcast that I record on my iPhone and easily upload to the “AudioBoo” website for easy inclusion on our home page. At the moment, the content includes major events of the week but I’m open to suggestions for other content.  I wrote about this on my blog at: http://bit.ly/sJkThW. I also will be more faithful to our Harold Martin Twitter feed @HMartinSchool so I moved a widget for HMS Tweets up the home page a bit. Feel free to follow me personally: @wcarozza if you like to read about the education field.

As I write this, the flakes are falling slowly out my window on Thursday’s snow day. I hope the day was not too much of an inconvenience. All the best for a great family weekend. Go Pats.

Sincerely,

Bill Carozza, Principal

Annual Spaghetti Supper

Another HMS Spaghetti Supper is right around the corner. It has been such a great tradition to get all of the wonderful families together in support of our school.

The date for this year’s event is scheduled for Thursday, February 2. There will be two serving times at 5:45 and then at 6:45. Please fill out the reservation form that will be sent home and return it to your child’s classroom teacher. The form is just to give the staff a rough idea of how many people to expect. Any family that would like to attend will have a spot. Thank you for your continued support and we hope to see you there!
