Summary:

I apologize for not knowing the names of the players for the assist on Epping's first goal and the goal scorer on Epping's second.  Early in the season........new manager....... sorry.

The game started off very sluggish but Hopkinton slowly picked up the pace and took control.  Hopkinton's first goal was scored when Tyler Ostolthoff scored by playing a hard driven cross in from the right flank which went in off an Epping defender.  Tyler turned nicely with the ball to cross it under pressure and to surprise the defense.

Epping scored early in the second half on the first time they got the ball deep into Hopkinton's end since halftime.  An Epping player snuck through the middle and made a nice shot on which Zach Cousens made an outstanding diving save to his left.  The ball rebounded to the side where an Epping player first timed a cross to the back post.  Another unmarked Epping player headed the ball home.

Hopkinton picked up the pressure and was seemingly on the verge of taking the lead when Epping got the ball forward and served a ball in from the left wing.  The ball initially appeared to sail over the goal. But the referees conferred and awarded a goal to Epping, ruling that the ball had gone in the goal and went out through a hole in the netting.

The Hopkinton players quickly responded to the set-back and took control of play.  The last 20 minutes of the game was all Hopkinton with many close scoring opportunities.  Lincoln Field orchestrated many of the scoring chances with his creative play in midfield.  Dave Wood anchored the awakened Hopkinton defense who only on a few occasions allowed the ball over midfield in the last 20 minutes.

"This is the second game in a row where we did not play with any passion until we were down a goal.  Hopefully, the players are angry enough to start our next game the way we finished the last two, with one exception.  Once we "break the ice", this team is capable of scoring many goals."

Summary:

After starting slow in the first two games this season, Hopkinton exploded for 4 goals in the first half including the first at 3 minutes into the game.  We hit the post twice in the second half and just missed 2 more times in the second half.

Robbie Friedlander and Ben Lajoie had great games up front.  They each scored a goal but each created many more opportunities by playing nice balls to attacking midfielders.

Lincoln Field, Mike Long, and Tyler Ostolthoff controlled the midfield while Jay Reno and Dave Wood kept things settled in the back.

Sophomore Zach Cousens continues to impress with his poise and earned his first career varsity shut-out.

"In the first half we finally varied the attack as we are capable of.  We showed not only creativity, but hunger to score.  Even though the second half was not as well played tactically, the team played hard and fast for the full 80 minutes.  Campbell is a very good team and that just emphasizes how well we played in the first half.  Campbell did not slow down one bit, and in fact played even harder in the second half."

Summary:

Hopkinton hit the post 3 times in the first half and had many near misses.  Conant's keeper made 4 or 5 terrific saves in that first half as well.  Hopkinton dominated possession for most of that half with previously undefeated Conant only venturing over midfield a few times.  However, Conant scored on their first real opportunity of the game early in the second half and suddenly the intensity of the game picked up significantly.  Hopkinton responded with a goal 5 minutes later and the clincher came in the 65th minute.  Conant's keeper had 3 or 4 fabulous saves in the second half also.

The goal of the game was the first, by Jay Reno.  Tyler Fuglestad made a beautiful cross from deep in the right corner.  Jay Reno had made a run from his defensive midfield position and really did a nice job of getting to the ball and heading it into the top corner at the back post.

Jay Reno was the player of the game.  Jay stepped in for Lincoln Field who sat out the game with an injury.  Lincoln is such an on-field leader for us in the midfield and Jay, who normally plays in the back, stepped up and not only scored two goals but owned the midfield defensively as well as spread out the field with intelligent distribution.

Freshman Tyler Fuglestad played a strong two way game at wide midfield, assisting on the first goal but also creating other opportunities with smart runs and nicely played balls.  Tyler and fullback Ben Metcalf did a great job defensively for us today as well.

Summary:

Hopkinton scored some pretty goals today against a tough Hillsboro defense.  The opener was a corner kick where Jay Reno headed the ball down into the lower corner.  On the second goal, Tyler Ostolthoff drilled a ball into the upper 90 from 25 yards out with his second touch after a quick turn.  Tyler's second goal was a one touch shot off of a square ball from Travis Fuglestad.  Jay Reno's 2nd goal (the team's 5th) was another header that was served by Rob Friedlander who made a nice turn out wide to make a quick two touch cross.  Both Ben Lajoie's and Rob Friedlander's goals were great shots off of very quick restarts.  Joe Dammon's goal was on a nice through ball that he played away from the defender with the first touch and placed into the lower corner with the second.

Working hard to get quick, one and two touch opportunities is something we have been stressing.  With each game, we seem to be getting better and better at understanding this.  This was especially necessary today because Hillsboro and is so active and physical.

Summary:

Conant and Hopkinton were both tied in the standings at 5 - 2 coming into this game.  The first time we played Conant, the score was 1 - 1 and they had momentum partway through the second half.  This was an important game for us to establish how much we have improved over the season.  Although we still need to be more consistent in doing so, we are learning to control the pace of the game and not play at the speed our opponent wants to.

Tyler Ostolthoff and Jay Reno have doing a tremendous job in midfield in place of the injured Mike Long and Lincoln Field.  They are a dominating defensive tandem and are creatively distributing the ball all over the field away from pressure.

The goal of the game was scored by Matt Demers.  Although his header was very nice, the assist is what made it a tremendous goal.  Robbie Friedlander made a great run to the corner and received the ball where he was tackled by a Conant defender.  Robbie won the ball back, beat a second defender, and realizing the bad angle he dribbled to the baseline where he played a perfect cross right onto the head of Matt Demers.

Liv Miller obviously had a fine game at his wide midfield position with 3 assists.

Summary:

The game started off at a relaxed pace with Hopkinton moving the ball around and controlling play.  However, toward the end of the half, Campbell picked up the pace and Hopkinton seemed content to play even.  Midway through the second half, Hopkinton took control back and dictated the pace for the rest of the way.

On one hand, scoring 6 goals against a good team on their field is a big positive to take away from this game.  On the other hand, Campbell exposed some defensive weaknesses in all parts of the field which is also a positive if we learn from it.

Rob Friedlander played another outstanding game.  His intelligent movement and passing up front are creating many opportunities for us.  Rob had developed into such a complete player.  His defensive efforts in midfield for us today were pivotal in helping us take momentum back.  Rob also scored the game winning goal.

Lincoln Field played well in limited minutes today as he works himself back into the lineup coming back from an injury.  Travis Fuglestad and Liv Miller also had strong games in the midfield for us today.

Hopkinton: Zach Cousens, 1 save
Hillsboro: Mitch Philbert, 19 saves

Summary:

Hillsboro worked hard and played a very organized game defensively today.   However, Hopkinton stayed patient throughout the game, moving the ball around effectively.  Hillsboro's keeper made some fine saves and there were a number of near misses.  Jay Reno's goal was a beauty.  He headed the ball off of a corner kick which was saved and after the rebound was knocked around a few times in front of the goal, the ball somehow ended back on Jay's chest who settled and turned with the first touch and blasted it home with his second touch.  Lincoln Field's goal was a sweet head ball into the back post top corner off a very nice cross from Matt Demers.  Both of Rob Friedlander's goals were the result of some nice dribbling and finishing, beating a couple of defenders each time.

Hopkinton's defense, lead by David Wood and Jay Reno played very well today, seldom allowing Hillsboro over midfield.

Summary:

Ben Lajoie scored a beautiful goal to break the 0 - 0 tie.  Ben turned with the ball about 30 yards from goal and with the second touch bent the ball into the top corner.  Hopkinton had numerous other opportunities today but Raymond's very aggressive defense held us off.  However, Hopkinton remained patient and finally broke the ice.

Hopkinton's defense was solid throughout the game, lead by sweeper David Wood.  Ben Metcalf, Jay Reno, and Luke Simon all played strong defensive games for Hopkinton.

We managed the 1 - 0 lead very well and held Raymond to only one real opportunity the rest of the way.  Raymond has one of the best players in the state in forward Jake Yaris and our defense collectively held him to only one or two shots on goal today.

Summary:

Newmarket play an outstanding game today and outplayed us in the first half.  However, we were very resourceful in scoring two nice goals and just missing on one or two others.  We settled down and handled their defensive pressure better in the second half and were able to possess the ball a little more like we are used to.

Luke Simon and Nate Mouseau played strong games today in central defense filling in for the injured Jay Reno and the sick (with flu) Dave Wood.  Zach Cousens played a very good second half in goal coming off his line tough to win well played balls down the middle.

As he has for us many times this season, Rob Frieldander continued creating opportunities up front by unsettling Newmarket's defense with dangerous dribbling and unselfish playmaking.  Matt Demers goal was a head ball to the back post on a cross from Rob.  Lincoln Field played a strong game in midfield offensively and defensively.  Lincoln's goal was a beautiful first time shot off of a rebound from a free kick.

Scoring:
Hopkinton: 5th minute, Ben Lajoie from Rob Friedlander

Sanborn: AJ Mazalouski, 12 saves

Summary:

Today was one of those frustrating days where we hit the post at least twice, missed a couple of open nets, had a goal called back, and had a number of other good opportunities.  However, the bottom line is that we fought off a good team and found a way to win.  Even though we scored early, Sanborn had more possession and was winning most 50/50 balls until about halfway through the first half.  Hopkinton gradually picked up the pace of the game until we took control, but never to the level we are capable of playing at.  Sanborn had some fast forwards and creative midfielders and had a couple of good opportunities throughout the game but the Hopkinton defense basically smothered anything that Sanborn started.

Although we have been playing O.K. the last couple of games, our team was more fun to coach when we were 0-2 and angry.  We have won 12 in a row and have not shown that same hunger since we beat Raymond a couple of weeks ago.  Let's see if we step it up going into tournament.

Ignoring the lack of finishing for a moment, Ben Lajoie and Rob Friedlander are working together very well as our starting pair of forwards.  They are tough to stop.

Summary:

Sophomore Zach Cousens posted his 7th shut-out of the season today.  Hopkinton took control right away but took a while to find the goal.  Once that happened, we scored 3 times right at the end of the first half and 4 times in 3 minutes of the second half.

Dave Wood and Mike Long played strong games.  Both are making comebacks of sorts; Mike from injury and Dave from the flu.  Dave anchors our defense from his sweeperback position and Mike plays in the midfield.  This is Mike's 2nd game back after missing 12 games with an ankle injury.

Our defense stayed compact and stopped Mascenic counter attacks before they developed, keeping the ball in our offensive half of the field for the vast majority of the game.  Our goals were scored in a variety of ways today.  Both things are great signs going into tournament play.

Mascoma: Cliff Crory, 12 saves

Summary:

Lincoln Field's goal to start the game was drilled into the lower corner, a very nice finish after beating 2 defenders.  The goal of the game was Tyler Ostolthoff's, however.  Mike Long received a pass off a restart in midfield.  He played a great ball over the top to Tyler who was streaking to goal from his midfield position.  Tyler headed it in from 8 yards out.  On the final goal, Travis Fulglestad beat his man to the endline and played a ball over the keeper to Kevin Hill who fought off a tight defender and knocked it home.

David Wood had yet another solid game anchoring the backfield from his sweeper back position.  Defensively we stayed compact and really limited Mascoma offensively in the second half.  Even though all of our goals were scored by midfielders today, that space was created by Rob Friedlander and Ben Lajoie who played very strong games up front.  Sophomore keeper Zach Cousens continued to play with the composure we have come to expect.  Even though he didn't have many saves, Mascoma was trying to attack with long, direct balls (in the first half especially) over our backs and Zach would just come hard of his line and authoritatively prevent anything dangerous from happening.

This was a very physical game.  It was a great test our composure.  We are ready to face Campbell in the quarterfinal round on Sunday.

Summary:

Today's game was simply a solid, team effort for a well deserved win.

Among the many players who played well today, Rob Friedlander and Tyler Ostolthoff stood out.  Rob is such a creative and unselfish player.  He is so much of a threat that when he has the ball, he draws 2 or 3 defenders yet keeps his composure and plays perfect passes to teammates making hard runs to goal.  Tyler was on the receiving end of one of Rob's passes in the second half.  Tyler played both in the middle and wide midfield today and had a complete game, offensively and defensively.  Mike Long's goal in the first half was much like Tyler's.  Rob drew a handful of defenders to the baseline and played a ball across where he slammed a one touch ball home.

Given O.K., but not great field conditions today.  We played conservatively for much of the second half (after the early goal in that half).  However, for much of the first half, our offense did a great job of varying the attack.  When we play like that, we are so hard to defend.  Defensively, we stayed compact and didn't allow Campbell more than a couple of good opportunities throughout the whole game.  The couple times Campbell snuck through, sweeper Dave Wood neutralized things or keeper Zach Cousens was well positioned and moved aggressively to the ball.

Hopkinton's total season record is now 15 - 2.  Our next game is Friday, 10/28 @ 4:30.  This is a semi-final game vs. Raymond @ Merrimack Valley.

Scoring:

Keepers:
Hopkinton: Zach Cousens, 6 saves
Raymond: Derrick Prince, 12 saves

Summary:

After Raymond tied it up, right before the ensuing kick-off, one official yelled to the other- "1 second left".  I am not sure what to say when your team is literally 1 second away from a 1 - 0 semi-final victory and you end up losing.

We did not play a perfect game and certainly could have finished (in a scoring sense) better, but there were periods of time in that game when I am not sure if a high school team could have looked better moving the ball around and creating exciting opportunities.  Sometimes life doesn't work the way it should I guess.  Hopkinton played a very, very good game.

Rob Friedlander and Ben Lajoie played great games up front as did Mike Long, Tyler Ostolthoff and Lincoln Field in midfield.  Our backs, Dave Wood, Jay Reno, Luke Simon, Ben Metcalf and Nate Mousseau played a terrific game containing Jake Yaris and Nicholas Papamichael, two very talented players from Raymond.  Sophomore keeper Zach Cousens was solid as usual.

Raymond must certainly be credited for never giving up.  They played well throughout the game and somehow kept us from cracking the game open.  After we broke the ice, I was sure a flurry of goals were going to be scored.  Raymond's keeper was outstanding making a number of key saves.  Raymond simply won the fight at the end.

Hopkinton's final season record is 15 - 3.
