Collection Development Plan

Underlying Principles

The curriculum drives the collection. Library resources support, and in some cases enable, the individual courses which make up the Program of Studies. Acquisitions are measured against this real curriculum, not against an imagined, ideal collection.

The textbook is on the skids. Textbooks are no longer the primary learning (or teaching) focus. Library collections are directly related to the success of students engaged in inquiry and discovery learning, resource-based learning, constructivist learning, and other prevalent "hands-on" methods.

In the library, more is more. The trend is for courses to present fewer topics of study, which students then explore at length ("less is more"). The library will develop collections which bring greater depth and specificity to each of these areas.

The user isn't always in the room. Because library resources are often central to academic success, students must be able to consult them when & where the need arises. The Library will provide in-library, in-classroom, and in-home access to its catalog, internet subscriptions, and other important electronic resources.

This plan has been prepared by the librarian, with the direct advice of the faculty, to guide the acquisition of library materials at Hopkinton High School.
