Minutes for the meeting of October 4, 2007

Present: Kathy Donohoe, Julie Morris, Nancy Skarmeas, Bill Carozza, Chris Kelley, Eileen Reinacher, Natalie Duval, Laura McGlashan, Joan Follansbee, Kathi Echelberger, Larry Keniston, Sally Turcotte. Sam Delgado

 

Kathy Donohoe asked that the September minutes be approved at the November meeting. 

 

Budget

Laura McGlashan reported a cash balance of $7,976.35. 

 

Funding Requests

1. High school teacher Jim Kociuba submitted a request for $175 for admission for 35 students to the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. Motion to approve made by Nancy Skarmeas; seconded by Laura McGlashan. Approved.

 

2. Sixth grade teacher Joan Follansbee requested $350 to help pay for a sixth grade field trip to the Weather Discovery Center in North Conway. Motion to approve made by Sally Turcotte; seconded by Julie Morris. Approved.

 

3. A request was submitted by Becky Perkins, MSS fourth grade teacher, for $145 to pay for a turtle program to be presented by Mary Doane. Motion to approve made by Natalie Duval; seconded by Eileen Reinacher. Approved.

 

4. HMS teacher Maddy Kaplan submitted a request for $1,000 to help pay for the author-in-residence program. Motion to approve made by Kathy Donohoe; seconded by Laura McGlashan. Approved.

 

5. HMS and MSS counselors Jackie Kleiner and Mary Chris Duncan submitted a request for $1,300 to pay for the TIGER program to be presented at HMS and MSS on January 18th. After a discussion of the uncertain budget due to this yearŐs new PTA fundraiser, Bill Carozza said that the school could split the cost of the TIGER program with the PTA. The request was amended to ask for $650. Motion to approve made by Kathy Donohoe; seconded by Sally Turcotte. Approved.

 

Safe Routes to School Grant

Natalie Duval reported that the Safe Routes to School grant application for $20,000 was submitted and would likely be approved in December. Once the grant is received, bike safety classes will be planned for the spring at MSS and HMHS and the group will continue discussions about increasing the number of children walking to school and the safety of walking routes. The proposed sidewalk leading into HMS will be planned for summer of 2008. Natalie plans to speak to the leader of the Concord Safe Routes group about attending a future Hopkinton PTA meeting to speak about ConcordŐs experience with this project. 

 

Bike and Ski Helmets

Natalie Duval will organize both of these sales for the PTA.

 

Hawk Shirts Sale

Julie Morris will coordinate the sale of Hawk merchandise to HMS and MSS families. Profits will be split with the HMHS booster club.

 

Upcoming Events

1. A yoga night for HMS children and their parents, run by Ingrid Dinter, will be scheduled for this fall.

2. Due to the expense and uncertainty of  weather and attendance, the decision was made to table plans for a tubing night at PatŐs Peak. 

3. Sam Delgado continues to look into a glow bowling night at BoutwellŐs in Concord.

4. A suggestion was made that the PTA do an email survey of parents about possible family events.

5. Kathi Echelberger will look into a possible entertainment book fundraiser to support the seventh grade environmental camp.

 

Halloween Party at HMS

The annual Halloween parade and party will be held at HMS on Saturday, October 27th, from 1:00 to 2:30 pm.
