HOMEWORK
I have been fortunate to work as an educator
in schools from
preschool to college and I can tell you that
one of the most talked
about issues at all levels is homework.
Nationally, this educational
issue suffers from a lack of balance in many
cases, with educators
and parents often overemphasizing the influence
it has on academic
achievement while still other educators
dismiss it entirely. ThereÕs
a need for balance. Join us at the next PTA
meeting on November 2,
when we will discuss the homework issue in
some detail for our
elementary schools.
I hope to see you on Saturday, October 28
for one of Harold Martin
SchoolÕs hallmark activities, the Halloween
Event that begins at 1
PM. Seeing families together that day is
priceless.
Have a wonderful weekend,
Bill Carozza, Principal

THE PACE OF P.E.
Kindergarten
Physical Education for many kindergarten
students is a Òbrand newÓ
experience. One of our first concepts
is personal space. Students
recite the verse, ÒSpace is a place where I
touch no one and I touch
no thingsÓ and then apply this idea. In the
game of Moving with Music
showing their abilities to march, hop, crawl,
gallop, skip, and jog
without touching anyone or anything.
Grade One
The beginning of the school year is a
wonderful opportunity for the
students to think back and recall the many
physical education games,
activities, and experiences that were meaningful
and memorable to
them during the past year. The children were
encouraged to explore
the concepts of cooperation and fair play.
Grade Two
Physical Education for students in grade two
will have an overall
focus on fitness. Students are beginning to understand what it means
to be a physically fit person and the basic
concepts of fitness:
muscular strength and endurance,
flexibility, cardiovascular
endurance, and body composition.
Third Grade
The third graders are beginning this school
year with a Soccer Unit.
The children started the unit by practicing
the sport skills of
dribbling, passing, and trapping. The
students then learned about the
basic offense / defense strategies of
shielding, tackling, using the
long pass, and aiming for accuracy. In the
next few classes, the
children will increase their knowledge of
basic rules of soccer such
as hand violations, out of bounds play,
player positions, field play,
and goalie privileges. The children will then be able to apply
all
these skills and knowledge in small sided
mini soccer games.
PE SUPER STARS
As many of you may remember, Tim La Torra
was my student teacher in
physical education last Fall. Mr. La Torra created an ÒExpress
YourselfÓ bulletin board that identified the
six basic expectations
in PE class:
(1) wear sneakers
(2) actively participate
(3) follow the rules
(4) respect others
(5) use equipment properly
(6) show good sportsmanship.
At the end of every class, students were to
express how they
performed in P.E. based on those six
expectations: Awesome, Good
Work, or Needs Work. At the end of the month, the class that
earned
the most ÒawesomesÓ was given the
prestigious ÒSuper Sneaker AwardÓ-
one of his size 14 sneakers to keep and
display in their classroom!
Mr. La Torra graduated from NEC and is now
teaching PE at a middle
school in Sunapee. When Mr. La Torra left, he needed to take his
sneaker awards with him. I am continuing with the tradition
of
students recognizing their performance in
P.E., and I have now
established the ÒP.E. Super Stars Award.Ó
The class which earns the
most Awesomes is now given a stained glass
star sun catcher to bring
back to their classroom and hang in the
window. There a four stars:
Blue for kindergarten, Red for first grade,
Yellow for second grade,
and Green for third grade. This monthÕs P.E. Super Star Awards
go
to: Ms. BlanchardÕs morning kindergarten,
Mrs. KaplanÕs first grade,
Mrs. JonesÕ second grade, and Mrs. GradyÕs
third grade! Awesome work!

Halloween Costumes!
We need your help!
As many of you have probably heard I help
many of the African
Refugees in Concord, NH. I am trying to collect some
used/new
Halloween costumes for the refugee children
so they can participate
in trick –or- treating and in their
school Halloween functions. Last
year many of the kids didnÕt have access to
costumes or dress –up
clothing so they felt left out of the
festivities. If you have old
costumes or would like to purchase new
costume you can drop them off
at Bella in Hopkinton. I will distribute the costumes to
the
schools in Concord who have refugee children
in their classrooms. Any
wigs, makeup, or costume accessories would
also be welcome.
The sooner the better Éso I can distribute the costumes in time
for the Halloween festivities. The children range in age
from
2years -teenagersÉ
Thank you everyone for all of the donations
that you have dropped off
over the last yearÉ we are very
grateful! You have helped many,
many
needy families! We are continuing to accept
donations at BellaÉ if
you have any questions please contact Kim
Harris at 746-6378.
Happy Fall!
Fondly, Kim Harris
