Barbuda is a low lying coral island that is in the same region with the island Antigua. Barbuda is just southeast of Puerto Rico and is in between the Caribbean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean. Christopher Columbus was the first European to arrive on the island on his second voyage in 1493. At the time Arawak Indians inhabited the island. The Arawaken indians were one of the many Carribean tribes that had been attacked by the Cannibals of Guadalupe. The canniballs killed and ate their enemies such as the Arawakens. Columbus had rescued (really he captured them) Arawakens from the cannibals many times and had some battles with the cannibals. French and Englishmen made settlements on the island in 1667 and used the natives as slaves to run the sugar plantations on Barbuda and Antigua.
Antigua is a high volcanic island that is in the same region with the island Barbuda. Antigua is southeast of Puerto Rico and between the Caribbean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean just like Barbuda. It's only about 30 miles south of Barbuda. It was filled with Arawaken indians as well and was conquered by the Europeans in 1667 as well. It didn't have very good soil so not alot of farming was done on the island. Although it was a spot for a great sugar plantation in the late 16 hundreds. The 2 islands were given independance in 1981 by the British Commonwealth.
