Canary Islands

When Christopher Columbus took his long journey across the Atlantic Ocean to the New World (Which he thought was asia) he stopped at some familiar islands known as the Canary Islands. He stopped at the Canary Islands to sail west by the steady trade winds that blew east from Africa. Or he stopped there for love reasons because he loved a women that lived on the island. The Canary islands were called the Canaries not for the name of the small birds that lived on the island, but for the many dogs on the island. Canary sounds like canine huh?!? So the canary birds are named after an island populated by dogs!! Weird.

3 Island Groups of the Caribbean

There are 3 island groups in the Caribbean sea. The Greater Antilles, the Lesser Antilles, and the Bahamas. The Greater Antilles consist of the big islands Cuba, Jamaica, Hispaniola, and Puerto Rico. They sort of curve downward from Florida to the Lesser Antilles. At the end of Puerto Rico, a bunch of small islands curve downward toward the tip of South America. The Bahamas are on the side of Florida and they go down towards the northern end of Cuba. The Bahamas are shapped like little L’s, O’s, U's and C’s. Some of the Lesser Antilles were formed by volcanos and have a big mountain in the middle but have a flat ring of land around the island's mountain. One Lesser Antille island known as Montserrat still had it's volcano on the island. The government thought that it was inactive untill 1995 when it erupted and buried the city in ash and sut.Another strange island is the low lying Barbuda. It's the same country with another high island called Antigua.Click here to learn more!!! One large continental island of the carribean is Cuba.
