Now sailing for 150 nautical miles away from land, Columbus’ three ships, The Pinta, Nina, and Santa Maria head for the Canary islands. Why the Canaries? Well since Columbus’s voyage would take him to unknown places and they didn’t know when the next time they would reach land would be, they stopped to stock up on fruits, vegetables, fresh water, and meat. The canaries were the western most territory of Spain. The canaries are infested with wild dogs. (that is why they are called the canaries!) The Canaries are tropical.

Greater Antilles: The Greater Antilles are located in the Caribbean region, just south of Florida. Cuba , Hispaniola, Jamaica and Puerto Rico make up the Greater Antilles. Off of Puerto Rico are the volcanic islands known as the Lesser Antilles.

Lesser Antilles: The Lesser Antilles are made from volcano tops. They start near Puerto Rico and go all the way down to South America. There are about 30 large islands, one of wich is Montserrat.

Bahamas: The Bahamas are a group of islands located south east of Florida. From an airplane they look like little C’s, U’s, L’s, and O’s! The Bahamas are in a tropical climate.
