Mt. Cardigan is in Alexandria NH up north. It is Northwest Bristol and East of Orange NH. It is also near Newfound Lake, from the summit of Fire Screw which is a neighboring mountain to Cardigan you can see Newfound Lake. It was Huge and you could see the whole horse shoe shape of it. The absolute location of the summit of Cardigan is: 43 degrees 38.972 minutes N 71 degrees 51.462 minutes W. The location of the base lodge is: 45.39.025 minutes N 71.92.668 minutes W.

The forest at this time of year was very colorful; there were lots of plants on the trail. One of which was called the hobble bush. It is called the hobble bush for two reasons, one is that people used to tie their horses up with it and the other is that they are low to the ground and so flexible that people used to trip over them. There were lots of birch and beach trees along the trail. Coming down the mountain was pretty tough because it was so steep and it was rock. I can’t imagine if it was wet.

I learned to tell the difference between the three types of birches. I also learned how to tell a hemlock from a spruce or fur tree. We learned a lot of things as we went hiking to welton falls. Our guide made us give lessons to each other, which was pretty cool. I also learned about nurse trees.

This is the mountain that we hiked on the second day of session 2
