Hopkinton’s Team Oz-ram wins second place in US First Robotics Regional Competition

On Saturday the US First Robotics team from Hopkinton High School and John Stark High School, Team Ozram, came in second place out of 48 teams (including two teams from Canada and one from Australia) at the Granite State Regional Competition held at the Verizon Center in Manchester.  Led by engineering teacher Mr. Will Renauld and several mentors, the 15+ member team did a fantastic job during the preliminary matches, and actually had the top score in the country as of Friday evening.

First Robotics is an annual competition started in NH by Dean Kamen in the 1990s, and is designed to encourage students to become engineers.  Teams are given six weeks to construct a robot that can accomplish a different task each year.  This year robots had to earn points by kicking a ball into a net.  In 2010 more than 3,000 high schools are competing in more than 40 regional competitions.  The winner of each regional competition goes on to the national competition held in Atlanta.  Team Ozram plans to compete in the Boston First Regional Competition to be held March 24-26.
