Meeting Minutes

PUBLIC SESSION

 

CALL TO ORDER/PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE

Ms. Durant called the meeting to order at 5:55pm; Mr. Jones led the Pledge of Allegiance.

ADDITIONS/DELETIONS FROM AGENDA BY SUPERINTENDENT

Mr. Chamberlin stated that there is an amendment to the schedule b nominations. Steve Crawford middle school baseball co-coach nomination would be tabled to the February 20, 2012, school board meeting, pending paperwork.

CORRESPONDENCE

Mr. Chamberlin presented a thank you note from the Hopkinton High School Year Book staff.

Motion to approve the minutes of the regular school board meeting held on January 9, 2012, was made by Mr. Jones, seconded by Mr. Josephson, all in favor, minutes carry.

COMMENTS FROM THE HOPKINTON SCHOOL BOARD

Mr. Jones stated that he went to a Nordic event this week and it was great.

Ms. Durant thanked the Budget Committee for their thoughtful deliberation last

Wednesday night. The Public Hearing is on Wednesday, February 8, 6:30pm, at the Hopkinton Middle High School auditorium.

STAFF REPORTS AND PRESENTATIONS

  1. a. Hopkinton High School Program of Studies (Action Item)

 

Mr. Kelley articulated the following changes to the 2012-2013 Program of Studies.

Graduation Requirements

 

Integrated Math 1, Integrated Math 2 – changed to Algebra 1 and Algebra

 

Grade 9: Algebra replaced Integrated Math 2

 

Grade 10: Algebra 2 replaced Integrated Math 2

 

Digital Electronics will be offered again in 2013-2014

 

Project Running Start Courses: tuition up to $150 per four credits

 

Extended Learning Opportunities: description was rewritten and clarified

 

Experiential Learning Credit

 

Keyboarding, College Accounting 2, Small Business Mgmt. & Entrepreneurship will not be offered in 2012-2013

 

Computer Science – removed from POS

 

American Studies-Literature has been changed to American Literature

 

American Studies – updated course description

 

Music Theory will be offered in 2013-2014

 

French 1 is offered in 2012-2013

 

Spanish 1 will not be offered in 2012-2013

 

Peer-to-Peer Internships – course description added

 

American Studies – History changed to American History (new course description)

 

Foundations of Learning 1 and 2 – 1 credit changed to ½ credit

 

Driver’s Education cost increased to $650

Mr. Chamberlin stated that Steve Crawford, middle school baseball co-coach nomination, was tabled to the February 20 school board meeting, pending receipt of paperwork.

ITEMS FOR BOARD DISCUSSION

  1. a. Hopkinton School District FY13 Budget
    1. i. Summary: February 1, 2012 Hopkinton Budget Committee Meeting

Mr. Chamberlin extended his appreciation to Budget Committee Chair Janet Krzyzaniak for the additional meeting on February 1 to address the Hopkinton Education Association Collective Bargaining Agreement. He thanked Ms. Clark, Ms. Durant, Mr. Jones, and Mr. Luneau for an excellent presentation. The Budget Committee voted unanimously to support the school board recommended budget.

The Budget Committee deliberated and Mr. Lancaster made motion to remove $120,000, regarding changes in staffing due to enrollment, which failed 6 to 3. Ms. Irwin made a motion to reduce special education and technology, but there was not a second to her motion.

  1. ii. FY 13 Unreserved Fund Balance Estimate

Mr. Chamberlin stated that there was one question Mr. Luneau wanted addressed tonight. Budget Committee member Karen Irwin asked us to look at the end of year fund balance number.

Mr. Chamberlin stated that Ms. Clark monitors these numbers very closely and he was comfortable with the $250,000 estimated end of year unreserved fund balance.

ACTION ITEMS

12.  The Hopkinton School Board accept the Superintendent’s recommendation to approve the 2012-2013 Hopkinton High School Program of Studies.

A motion was made by Mr. Jones, seconded by Mr. Josephson, motion carries, all in favor, not opposed.

13.  The Hopkinton School Board approve the Superintendent’s nomination of Schedule b Spring Sports assignments as amended for the 2011- 2012 school year.

ADJOURNMENT

At 6:38pm a motion was made by Ms. Jones, seconded by Mr. Josephson to adjourn the meeting, motion passed, all in favor, not opposed.
