Hopkinton School District Community Profile

Incorporated in 1765, the Town of Hopkinton has a rich and distinctive history. For a brief period, it served as New Hampshire’s state capital and later became a well-traveled stop along the passenger rail line between Boston and Montréal. Historically, the town developed as three interconnected areas: Hopkinton, primarily residential; West Hopkinton, centered around agriculture; and Contoocook Village, which emerged as the town’s commercial hub. Today, these areas remain closely connected, sharing the same ZIP code and public school system.

Hopkinton and its village center of Contoocook offer a classic small-town atmosphere shaped by well-preserved history and natural beauty. The community is home to working farms, scenic landscapes, and the historic Contoocook Railroad Covered Bridge, one of the oldest surviving covered railroad bridges in the United States. Both villages feature a variety of locally owned shops, services, and gathering places that contribute to Hopkinton’s strong sense of community and character.

Hopkinton is a welcoming, family-centered community that places a strong value on education, civic engagement, and connection. Families are drawn to the town for its highly regarded public schools, access to outdoor recreation, and vibrant community life. Seasonal events, youth athletics, libraries, trails, and local organizations provide opportunities for families to connect and stay involved. With a strong sense of tradition and shared responsibility, Hopkinton offers an environment where children and families can learn, grow, and thrive together.
