Section 504 Information

SAU 66 is committed to providing students with disabilities equal access to educational opportunities by aligning district policies and practices with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973.

Title II of the ADA and Section 504 prohibit discrimination on the basis of disability in programs and activities receiving federal financial assistance.

Section 504 Plans are accommodation plans developed by a team of individuals knowledgeable about the student, the evaluation data, and the placement options, and who understand how the student’s disability impacts access to educational opportunities. These plans are developed at the building level and may involve school counselors and other appropriate staff.

Once the team has determined that sufficient information is available, a determination is made as to whether the student has a disability under Section 504. If a student is found to have a disability, the team will determine whether accommodations or related aids and services are necessary to ensure the student’s educational needs are met as adequately as those of students without disabilities.

It is possible for a student to be found to have a disability under Section 504 and not require a formal accommodation plan. In such cases, the student remains protected from discrimination under Section 504.

Section 504 Plans are reviewed periodically and revised as warranted.
